In the latest decodeTV article, Setplex’s Solution Architect, Sergey Yarosh, shares his insights on the evolving landscape of content delivery, specifically the balance between public and private CDNs and the emerging potential of Open Caching.

Sergey discusses the advantages of combining public CDNs with private ones operated by ISPs, a strategy that can enhance content delivery by caching closer to the end user. He also shares his perspective on the challenges of getting ISPs on board and the financial and relationship factors that often play a bigger role than technology itself.

“Open Caching is a promising technology, but it’s still at an early stage of development,” says Sergey. He points out that while Open Caching could enable better cooperation between CDNs, CSPs, and ISPs, major CDN providers may hesitate to adopt it due to a lack of clear commercial benefits.

For smaller providers, Sergey highlights an alternative approach—creating localized CDN infrastructure that serves a specific geographic area. “If you need to deliver content in a defined local area—like one country or one city, or even one hotel—it doesn’t make sense to use a global CDN because you don’t need all that infrastructure,” he explains.
